Camp Pillowcases - Summer camps are for children with a variety of medical conditions and illnesses (asthma, cancer, kidney disease, spina bifida, etc.).  The camps are a chance for the children to experience a bit of normalcy and to get to know other children with the same illnesses and challenges.  Campers range in age from 5 years through teens. The campers get autographs from all their friends, nurses, doctors, and cabin-mates.  It is a keepsake that they treasure for many years.  The pillowcases must be washed as some children are very sensitive to sizing and fabric dyes.  The pillowcases are embroidered with the camp name/logo/theme along the edge.
Instructions for the Camp pillowcases will be distributed as we get closer to camp-time and themes for each camp are chosen.
“Going Home”, “Breaking Out”, and “Happy Birthday” Pillowcases - are given to children that have been in the hospital for an extended period of time.  Breakout parties are for children that are in the transplant unit and going home parties are for children who have spent an extensive time in neuron-rehab, traction, etc.  Some children are in the hospital for months and even years, so when they are finally able to go home, that is cause for celebration!  No birthday goes uncelebrated so birthday pillowcases are a party favorite when celebrating a child’s special day while in the hospital.  For the Going Home, Breaking Out, and Birthday party pillowcases, it is preferred that white pillowcases are used.  If white is unavailable, then feel free to use light colored solid fabrics, something easy to write on.  Cut 4 inches or so off of the border.  Take a piece of a bright, sunny, fun fabric that is slightly wider than the amount you just cut off.  Press in half and sew onto the white pillowcase, replacing the border you cut off.  You can also insert a smaller piece for trim if you want to.  Embroider or appliqué “Going Home”, or “Breaking Out”, or “Happy Birthday” on the border using any font or style.
Holiday Pillowcases - are distributed to help decorate the patient rooms and lift their spirits for Valentines Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas, Chanukah, etc.  The goal of the Stitch-A-Wish Stitchers is to have a holiday pillowcase for every inpatient, especially during the winter holidays.  Any holiday fabric for preschoolers, boys, girls, and teens is welcome.
Hint:  Some stitchers shop for holiday fabric “after” the holiday to take advantage of sales and clearances.
